English Dub Review: Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest “Aldoron, the Wood Dragon God”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Natsu and friends meet their dopplegangers at Fairy Nail and later meet the Wood Dragon God, Aldoron.

OUR TAKE

We’re very firmly in a new arc now as Natsu’s group enters the city of the Wood Dragon God Aldoron, though I guess it would be more accurate to say he IS the city, as it is revealed that the city was built on his hand and is much larger than it, living up to his reputation as the largest Dragon ever. But before this major revelation, we kinda go through what may be considered some filler material with the Fairy Nail people, who, as it turns out, are not deliberate imitators of Fairy TAIL, but just a bunch of unrelated actors who coincidentally look like every single person there. And would you believe that this is NOT the first time the group has met people who were weird physical duplicates of themselves? Yep, one of the early arcs (and by early I mean starting around episode 76) involved the group going to a parallel earth, doing the multiverse stuff long before it became played out in the mainstream! Except there it was part of a grander story and felt important to that, especially in how it continued certain characters’ respective plot lines. And as for the story or character significance of why there are basically Fairy Tail CLONES in THIS world…I guess it’s to get Gray to want to be clearer with his feelings for Juvia, which…yeah, sure, fine I suppose.

What does help is that this episode feels like a bit of a breather between finishing up all the business with Mercphobia and going into the Aldoron stuff, which more or less kicks off soon after. And with the reveal about Aldoron’s nature and how the people in this city rely on him for even the ground they walk on, the moral quandary of whether to kill or seal him rises up just like it did before in the last arc. Will the team have to kill Aldoron for this mission to work? Will just sealing him be enough, if possible? And will they be putting innocent people at risk when the dragon is part of their literal infrastructure as opposed to just their mayor or whatever? And perhaps most importantly, does Aldoron have a hot secretary like Mercphobia did?! Well, all of that will have to wait a bit, as the Touka/White Mage plotline is also finally colliding with Natsu’s group and bringing all of the Fairy Tail guild to them, so we’ll see how they handle all of that next time.
