English Dub Review: Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction 16

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Against all odds, Keita tries his best to shut down the mothership’s reactor before it explodes.

OUR TAKE

Well, after all that build up and title cards predicting the end of humanity, it seems that we have FINALLY…avoided it? I say that questioningly since, well, the episode ended with a giant and blinding explosion that killed several named characters, including Kadode’s old teacher crush and Ouran’s brother. Tokyo is basically dust at this point, but it sure seemed like a worse fate for humanity was just about to unfold, with that giant black hand coming out of the sky and activating legions of red bubbles all around the world that a bunch of people were rather stupidly TOUCHING WITH THEIR BARE HANDS, SERIOUSLY WHAT THE FUCK. And it seems that there was some, let’s say, disagreement on which fate was better for humanity between Keita and Kenichi as the two have a brief fight before the ship’s explosion, with Kenichi somehow knowing (or maybe just speculating) that the hand and bubbles are part of a greater species than the Invaders that he wants to fight and defeat to be the real hero at the end of it all. Maybe he’s also from a different timeline and that’s how he knows this? But unfortunately for him, Keita manages to get inside and, while the effects were…probably not what he expected, it seems this big explosion is at least getting rid of all the bubbles.

So, apocalypse avoided, our main characters are alive, and hey even Keita got to make it out, at least for now. Oh, and Ouran kissed Kadode, which is neat but also feels disconnected from everything. Frankly, that’s kinda my overall issue with these last few episodes: Ouran and Kadode are basically side characters in these major events. That wouldn’t exactly be a problem for me if they were totally disconnected like what had been happening for most of the series. Plenty of major worldbuilding and shaking events occurred while they were dealing with regular human stuff to juxtapose against up until now but…we know that the only way that Keita got that info was from Ouran’s memories of another timeline, so she is for sure connected. AND the only reason she has those memories is because she wanted so much to save Kadode that she wanted to go THIS timeline. It just really feels like she should’ve been involved in this somehow, even if it was alongside Keita and maybe even Kadode. Welp, two more episodes to go and maybe we’ll get some link to that Episode 0 we got. I mean Tokyo is totally destroyed so that has to have taken place before this, but hey, you never know. Maybe Kadode’s dad will pop up to give her one last bit of trauma or closure or some third thing.
