English Dub Review: Chained Soldier “Reunion, Coco, Lick”

Overview (Spoilers Below): A demon who looks like Yuuki’s sister appears and abducts him!  Then, after the dust settles, an enemy licks Yuuki down for…medical reasons.

Our Take: As if being pursued by a love-stricken Tenka was bad enough, we now have another issue surrounding the Shuuki that seems more personal than the others.  Following the encounter with the 6th Squadron, the episode puts its focus back on Yuuki’s older sister, Aoba, who had disappeared five years ago.  But, as it turns out in one of the earlier episodes, Aoba is still alive but is now in the form of a humanoid Shuuki.  After several episodes involving the Mato Exhibition match, the series finally brings Aoba back into the picture, as she and her other humanoids, Koko and Naon, kidnap Yuuki as their prisoners…or so we thought. As the Squadrons unite once more to rescue Yuuki, we see that the humanoids, including Aoba, may not be as villainous as we thought they were.  Aoba is pleased to be reunited with Yuuki after years of separation, and Koko and Naon are basically pretty horny, specifically Koko.  Koko’s ability to heal wounds with her saliva is, unsurprisingly, what I expected: gross but somehow seductive.  Additionally, Aoba and her humanoid Shuukis are residing in the Hidden Village from the Demon Defense Force to avoid mistreatment from their oppressors.  If that’s not enough to surprise you, let’s add in the fact that the Peaches responsible for giving women supernatural powers are also the reason for the humanoids’ transformations. So, the rivalry between the Demon Defense Force and the Shuukis appears more complex than we usually thought from this basic good-vs-evil trope.  However, this will also put Yuuki in a challenging position of being forced to choose between serving the 7th Squadron and saving his older sister. This conflict is enough to elevate some interest in the show’s good vs. evil narrative and character development. I was a little bit doubtful at first regarding its sexualized narrative.  However, this episode continues to prove there’s more to the series than a series of soft-porn wet dreams.
