Review: Eggland

The long-awaited premiere of Adult Swim’s newest pilot series Eggland is a new series that follows senior citizens, Robert and Elizabeth Anderson through their slow-paced days in a planned, age-restricted retirement community called Eggland. The series comes from Conner O’Malley (Aidy Bryant’s husband), Brendan O’Hare, and Cole Kush (Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared) and if you thought the PS3 cutscene-looking Psi Cops could use a little more pizazz, well you’re in luck, because the producers of Eggland go all out with their PS4 cutscene-looking pilot.

The premise is your classic ‘fish out of water’ idea that isn’t too far from a Hank Hill or Brooks Hatlen viewpoint on a world that is slowly passing them by. Modern-day features that you and I take for granted like self check-out, smart watches, and crummy waiters with ridiculous hair buns all from the vantage point of retired military senior citizens and their families presented by way of Cole Kush and Conner O’Malley’s technical brilliance. I, for one, truly enjoyed a bunch of the site gags, most noticeably the big news story involving the kid on his bike and the extreme measures local PD had to go through in order to catch his diabolical ass.

There is a certain sweetness to the pilot, an asset that is sorely lacking in most adult animation these days, reminiscent of The Simpsons buttoning up one of their more classic efforts with Marge and Homer calling it a night in each other’s arms and the common bond that has been set there through decades of marriage. Likewise, Robert and Elizabeth give me Up vibes that I think can make for a good series. The slow build into the episode will be an interesting facet of the show that I’m wondering if a frenetic Adult Swim audience would be patient enough for, but there isn’t a whole lot that looks like this series available on cable TV and should be given additional network support.
