Insight: Crunchyroll Celebrates 15 Million Subscribers And Hasn’t Increased Price In Almost Five Years

Crunchyroll announced today that its streaming service has crossed a new era in its history – surpassing 15 million monthly subscribers who all enjoy the best anime from Japan. Fun fact, Crunchyroll takes the crown as the only streaming platform that has had no price increases since its launch in August 2020, keeping the cost at $7.99. The fact that anime popularity is increasing and Crunchyroll offers the most affordable option in anime streaming today is pretty remarkable.

The other streaming platforms know that anime is definitely driving growth and this can be seen quite evidently as it pertains to Google searches for requests for streaming free trials with the likes of Hulu and Netflix being the #1 and #3 most requested free trials of any streaming platform on the market today, but both streamers also regularly increase their prices pretty regularly so Crunchyroll comes off as the best valued streamer for anime in the industry by a mile and it isn’t even close.

Netflix has an average cost increase of 5.4% per year including the most recent increase which raised its price from $7.99 in 2011 to $15.49 in 2024. Over 12 years, Netflix had three price increases, averaging one every three years and two months. Hulu, saw an annual average increase of 5%, from $11.99 in 2015 to $17.99 in 2024 with series like Futurama that just debuted its 12th season last week. As mentioned, Crunchyroll has had no increases in those same time spans.
