English Dub Review: Wistoria: Wand and Sword “Order & Watcher”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Lady Elfaria issues an order to the academy to gather Frost Walker ice cores. Will quickly heads into the dungeon, but it’s already full of others trying to fulfill the order. As he looks for a less crowded area, he spots a fellow student under attack!

Our Take:

Will managed to spend another day at the academy following Edward’s cruel “test”, but as far as I’m aware, his troubles are far from over.  Like the previous episode, “Order & Watcher” begins with another flashback of Will’s past, showcasing more of the protagonist’s origin before the series.  The flashback answers the less-than-stellar question of how Will got the goggles he wore whenever he’s in battle mode. The goggles were a parting gift from Elfaria after she graduated to become the Magia Vander.  It’s another character moment that further drives Will’s relationship with Elfaria and his desire to become a Magia Vander like her.

Afterward, Will hears that Elfaria has invented a new ice magic that will give Jack Frost a run for his money, which requires the Frost Walkers’ ice cores from the dungeon’s fourth floor.  However, these ice cores also belong to a ferocious frost creature known as the Frost Rex, which can freeze its victims instantly upon close contact.  Fortunately, thanks to the explosives he got from his roommate, Rosti Nauman, Will easily conquered the monster to get the cores.  Of course, Will couldn’t have accomplished this arduous task without a timid yet cheerful student, Iris Churchill, later revealed to be the watcher, Iris X. Stellamaris, sent by Elfaria to watch over Will.

However, that’s not the only job Iris was sent to accomplish.  The Magia Vanders also sent her to search for someone worthy of taking the tower position for the upcoming “Fated Day”.  The purpose of this particular day remains unclear, but based on the title alone, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be an easy-going holiday.  On the bright side, Will makes a new friend with Iris despite not knowing her true purpose.  We’re only three episodes in, and I’m still slightly surprised at how invested I am in Wistoria despite being in the same leagues as Mashle.  Here’s hoping it keeps this magic train going.
