English Dub Review: Twilight Out of Focus “Kikuchihara Jin’s Troubles”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Popular film club president Kikuchihara Jin is regularly berated by his younger rival, Ichikawa Giichi.  During a violent argument one day, the two accidentally kiss.  Due to an unexpected family issue, Giichi is then assigned to become Jin’s new roommate.

Our Take:
One tale has ended, and another one has begun.  However, this love tale seemed more “problematic” than the love between Mao and Hisashi.  If you thought keeping promises was troublesome when it comes to love, you haven’t seen someone recovering from an accidental smooth.  This serves as the basis of the show’s second love story, which sees the film club’s narcissistic president, Jin, getting heated by Giichi, who really hates the president’s guts.  That is until everything changed with one unintentional kiss during their argument.
However, things got even more complicated when Giichi and Jin became roommates due to a family issue.  Considering their feud, this would’ve turned south extremely fast, but that’s surprisingly not the case.  Giichi was only calm and friendly toward Jin when they were in their dorm room but aggressive when they were anywhere else.  We also learned that the reason for Giichi’s frustration toward Jin is his dislike of Jin’s movies, which showcase their different tastes in cinematic quality.
With this episode, it seemed like this story might be another harmless low-stake arc involving two unexpected lovers.  However, that could change in future episodes since their secret love is kept hidden from everybody else, similar to Mao and Hisashi.  Whether it’ll be more interesting than Mao and Hisashi’s arc is uncertain, but based on what I saw, the “rivals-turned-lovers” scenario between Giichi and Jin has gotten off to a suitable start.  Also, I couldn’t help but appreciate the film easter eggs, including Jin’s mixture of the Paramount and Columbia logos in his advertisement. If that doesn’t tell you how much of a film fanatic I am, I don’t know what will.
