English Dub Review: The Irregular at Magic High School “Ancient City Insurrection Part 5”

Overview

The night before the Thesis Competition. Tatsuya receives a report from Fumiya that they have located Gongjin Zhou’s whereabouts. He was hiding at the JGDF’s 2nd Supply Base in Uji. Tatsuya speculates that he would not have enough offensive power to fight alone at the JGDF’s base, so he contacts Masaki. When Masaki hears that they would need to invade an army base to get to him, he hesitates for a moment but decides to accompany Tatsuya to fulfill his responsibilities as a member of the Ten Master Clans. The two invade the army base where soldiers controlled by Gongjin Zhou await…

Our Take

On the eve of the thesis competition, Tatsuya receives intel from Fumiya pinpointing Gongjin Zhou’s location at the Uji Second Supply Base. Realizing he can’t confront a military base alone, Tatsuya enlists Masaki’s help. Despite initial hesitation, Masaki agrees, and together they infiltrate the base, facing soldiers under Zhou’s mind control leading to a series of surprises during the battle.

The infiltration action sequence itself is easily the highlight as it showcased Tatsuya and Masaki’s teamwork, aided by Minoru and the Yotsuba family members. The episode also delves into the unsettling revelation about Minoru’s origins, which leaves Miyuki visibly irked. In combination with the Yotsuba family’s tentative acceptance of Tatsuya, sets the stage for future conflicts, particularly with the upcoming New Year’s banquet invitation that was given to Tatsuya…

Overall, the season finale effectively wraps up the current arc, although Zhou’s anticlimactic end leaves room for doubt about his true fate. The pacing manages to swiftly tie up loose ends while hinting at the challenges to come. With the next storyline after being adapted into a full-length anime movie known as “The Succession Arc”, I’m curious to see where this goes, or if there’s some big payoff when that movie does happen. Either way, when it wasn’t giving off creepy vibes between the Tatsuya and Miyuki, it was entertaining for what it was, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for this franchise.
