English Dub Review: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime “The Lightspeed Hero”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

While Rimiru keeps at finishing up the festival, he gets word that the “Lightspeed Hero”, Masayuki, is on his way to Tempest to fight Rimiru.

OUR TAKE

Just when you might have thought that the focus issues with this arc couldn’t get much worse, well, we’re at basically the halfway point (six episodes down and seven to go) and we’re shifting the spotlight to a completely new character for pretty much a whole episode. It’s interesting timing getting to this episode of an Isekai that goes into detail about another person who got Isekai’d like Masayuki right after the most recent dub episode of “No Longer Allowed in Another World” that also starts delving into the societal impact of having so many people just dropping in here. But whereas that show seems to be taking it head on and having a foil character to show the differences between people who get dropped in places like this, Masayuki doesn’t seem that different than Rimiru, at least based on we’ve seen. The main thing going for him is that he has a sort of passive unique skill called “Chosen One” that just seems to let him basically stumble through any conflict he comes across. Meet an angry thug? Well, he’s now you’re minion. Walk in on a trafficking conspiracy on the way to the bathroom? Well, they’re arrested before you need to do anything.

But even if Masayuki seems like, and probably is, a decent guy, it’s his benefactor that is the real problem. Another otherworlder, Yuuki, is the one steering him towards Rimiru, and we’ve seen that this Yuuki has his hands in a lot of pies, many of whom are enemies of Tempest. Why he’s doing any of this or opposes Rimiru is unclear at the moment so I don’t know if there’s much to say about him (other than he is apparently an ally of Rimiru, at least on the surface), but going by what we’ve seen of Masayuki’s “Chosen One” ability, this could very well be a way to get Yuuki’s bad connections to become more apparent so Rimiru and Masayuki can actually end up friends by the end of this. There’s still quite a lot of the festival left to go into though, as we will soon enter the fourth quarter of the season…but possibly not next week, as it looks like there may be a recap episode to cover. Can’t say I’m looking forward to that, but…I dunno, what the hell else am I supposed to do? Let’s just power through and hope that things end up somewhat good on the other side.
