English Dub Review: My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered “I’m Not So Rude as to Complain After Being Saved”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Yogiri and Tomochika are caught up in a trial.  Something strange starts happening to Mokomoko.

Our Take:
As if the zombie apocalypse is bad enough for the unlikely duo, they are now caught in a trial to determine the next “Sword Master”.  However, instead of competing against the other competitors, Yogiri and Tomochika plan to escape the “Great Tower”, which is said to collect the souls of the deceased.  Fortunately for them, this task is easier done than said, thanks to Yogiri’s instant death ability.  It does make for some humorous antics at first.  However, after a few episodes, it made me wish there were actual stakes involved in testing Yogiri’s immaculate and mysterious power.  This week’s episode continues this unfortunate streak, with Yogiri using his instant death ability on other competitors, including the tower’s creator and Masaki, without much of a conflict.  But, they got an additional ally after all this: a half-demon warrior named Theodisia.
Amid the characters’ tower adventure, the episode introduces us to another potential opponent: an assassin named Aoi.  Aoi is sent to take down Yogiri with the assistance of Daimon Hanakawa, who was last seen in the first episode.  I wouldn’t be surprised if Aoi is the next to perish by Yogiri’s ability because it’s basically what the show had to offer regarding its concept.  Without the proper stakes to drive its narrative and characters, the comedy involving Yogiri’s ability became stale very quickly.  We’re only halfway through the series, and I already wish that something exciting would happen to these characters already.
