English Dub Review: Fairy Tale: 100 Years Quest “Lineage of Fire”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Natsu gets some surprise help from Ignia, the unknown son of Igneel, the dragon who raised and trained Natsu as a child.

OUR TAKE

I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise that other dragons would get involved at some point, especially since the stated quest of this series is for the Natsu team to find and seal five dragons. With my limited knowledge of the previous series, I at least knew that the Fire Dragon I was aware of, Igneel, was long dead. And it wouldn’t exactly be super satisfying to just get to that part of the list, had Natsu give a sad speech about his dragon daddy, and then just move onto the next one, so they had to put SOMETHING in there, and having a surprise reveal that Igneel had a biological son out there this whole time definitely qualifies as something. Is it a GOOD something? Well, we’ll have to see how it’s followed up on whenever Ignia shows up again, but even if he’s only an assist in this instance to establish his presence right now, it also establishes there’s clearly going to be some bad blood between these two children of Igneel. Though apparently dragons are not exactly nurturing parents to begin with, so it MIGHT not be a grudge about what we might expect, but who knows.

At the very least, it moves the story along by giving Natsu a new level of power by eating not just fire to power up, but dragon fire, which I assume is a greater boost than just regular flames. Natsu’s ability to regain strength and energy from eating fire has actually been a pretty neat and quirky aspect of his moveset that I guess we hadn’t seen him do much of in this new series so far, so it’s nice to see that again. But more important to the events happening now, it incapacitates Mercphobia for the moment and hopefully gives everyone a chance to recover and figure out what the heck is going on. I mean WE know that there’s shit happening with Touka and The White Mage back with the guild, which we oddly don’t check in with this week, but I imagine that info is going to reach Natsu’s group soon enough. We’re definitely in the end stages of this first arc, and then it’s anyone’s guess what happens next…aside from people who already read the manga version, then they know EXACTLY where this is all going, but I don’t really plan to do that so I’m fine being in the dark until then!
