English Dub Review: Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction 12

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Kadode’s relationship with her old teacher quietly ends, while Ouran’s relationship with Keita seems to begin, all while Keita starts becoming more active in trying to save Invaders from attacks. He also reveals that Invaders were once humans who lived on Earth. One month remains until the end of humanity.

OUR TAKE

Things continue to deteriorate both on a personal and overall scale as the countdown ticks closer to humanity’s destruction. So is it weird that I was more surprised by Ouran’s love confession to Keita than the stuff about the Invaders being humans? Like seriously, I usually have a pretty good radar when it comes to anime and relationships but this felt like it came completely out of left field. Not only because it didn’t seem like there was much happening between Ouran and Keita but also because, if I’m being honest, it seemed like Ouran just wasn’t into guys or, frankly, anyone who wasn’t Kadode, although even that felt more like a Tuca and Bertie dysfunctional friendship than anything else. Then again, it’s not like there’s NOTHING between her and Keita, but…it feels more like it has to do with how he accessed her still somehow repressed memories. I guess we’ll see if this new spark has legs, unlike Kadode and her old teacher who I am glad to see finally put things to bed. I mean…I guess go to bed and then break up. I don’t wanna make assumptions, but it honestly seemed like a daddy issues thing with her, and while it seemed weirdly realistic for things to play out like that, I’m relieved we’re not going to be focusing on it for the rest of the series.

So yeah, it turns out the Invaders aren’t Invaders, not just because they weren’t invading in the first place, but also because they were apparently humans this whole time! And not just that, they’re just really compressed and blue! I guess that explains why they acted basically like tiny humans with technology that looked pretty human made, and hopefully we’ll learn more about how and when they became that way, though I’m sure time travel isn’t off the table. It also makes this First Contact and Cold War story feel a bit more down to Earth (hahaha) knowing that these beings that the regular humans we’re following have been killing and riling the public up against are actually just other humans. It’s unfortunately not hard to believe that we would do this to our own species because…well, have you MET other humans? Like not to get too Edgy Reddit Centrist Atheist but we kinda don’t like each other very much sometimes. Though even if this turned out to be revealed, I doubt anyone on the side of killing them would admit to it. This does make me wonder about the ship being worked on in the background and if we’re going to end up seeing the origins as we watch. Either way, we’re onto the final third of the series, starting next week.
