Review: Primos “Summer of Quehaceres; Summer of La Muñeca”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Tater tries helping her mom out with chores; later, Tater uses her cousin’s Lotlot’s doll to scare off her other cousins.

OUR TAKE

This other episode continues the pattern of Tater using any methods possible to avoid her cousins as they encroach on more of her space. Or at least, that’s initially the case, as we see each segment (aside from the first that was just introducing the premise) shows that while Tater’s first impulse is to get away from her family, she eventually comes around. In the second half of the first episode, she tried ransoming their luggage after they were given her room, but soon enough learned they were trying to make space for her as well and reconciled. In this second episode, the first segment has her being overwhelmed by all of these new chores to manage, but manages to find compromise when it becomes clear that her cousins want to help as well. And in the second segment, the first focused on a single cousin, what initially sees Tater use Lotlot’s doll to get alone time ends up being a way for the two of them to bond.

Now that the family is fully settled in and not seen as one big adversarial group to Tater, I’m guessing this will probably be how episodes giving the spotlight to the other cousins will also go, at least in terms of format. Tater is trying to do something herself, is paired up with one or more of the other cousins, finds some commonality with them, and continues to strengthen her bonds with her family overall as a result. If that’s what they’re going for, then it’s a solid way of slowly introducing the rest of them. I can see how it could get repetitive eventually though, so maybe they’ll figure out how to pair two Primos together, or even have them be in conflict with each other with Tater as the mediator, showing how she’s come to accept them all even when their differences clash like families tend to do sometimes. So yeah, just like with the first episode, Primos shows it’s off to a pretty good start, and hopefully breaks the curse of only getting two seasons that its recent peers got.
