Insight: Adult Animation From The Nineties Is Among The Most Popular Franchises On TV Today

I saw a lot of discourse last week when it was announced that The Simpsons was nominated for an Emmy and the notion that the show should be disqualified for future Emmy considerations for *checks notes* it’s age. Meanwhile franchises like Saturday Night Live, which predates The Simpsons by a number of years, gets to continue to enjoy Emmy nominations with very little recourse, but in either instance we’re using examples of series that have been on television for decades. Adult animation really started making strides in the 1990s as The Simpsons’ popularity reached across the globe followed closely by franchises like South Park and Family Guy, all of which have enjoyed billion dollar grosses as a result of their popularity and continue to do so today. As can seen by this chart, adult animation franchises are some of the most popular franchises in the world as can be seen by this chart:

This data presents an analysis of four 90s adult animated TV shows, metrics such as engagement, wiki views and IMDB ranking were found for each show. Scores were then found for each metric and then averaged to find the final score, identifying the most popular.

The Simpsons, an animated comedy that follows the lives of the Simpson family, takes the lead as not just the most popular adult animated series from the 90s airing today, but the most popular 90s TV show today regardless of format, with a popularity score of 9.75 out of ten. The show has an online engagement score of 20.63.

South Park, known for its dark humor and satirical take on real-world events, is the second most highly-rated adult animated show, with an overall score of 7.21. It has an engagement score of 12.96.

In third place is Family Guy, the long-running animated comedy that centers on the eccentric Griffin family, with a score of 6.06. The show boasts an online engagement score of 6.57.

Fourth in the ranking is Futurama, which follows Fry, who is cryogenically frozen and awakens 1,000 years in the future. The show has a popularity score of 5.64 and secures an engagement score of 7.76.

Seeing numbers like this and it’s no wonder why ads for streamers will prominently feature some or all of these brands especially when attempting to penetrate international markets like Australia where franchises like South Park and The Simpsons have directly attributed to the growth of that country’s animation industries. Hell, Vice President Kamala Harris even called into The Simpsons’ Comic-Con panel quoting the show!

Suffice to say, adult animation’s popularity has never been higher, but the most popular shows being talked about all over the internet are still the classic animated sitcom OG’s.
