English Dub Season Review: The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen Season One

Overview:

Reincarnated Princess Pride Royal Ivy wishes to change her fate as the last boss and rewrites her destined villainous role.

Our Take:

This has now become a Karlii Hoch appreciation post. I’m kidding, but only a little bit. I have a love/hate relationship with Sentai dubs but I almost always love Sentai voice talent. Karlii Hoch is someone that I hadn’t heard much of before but here lately she’s gotten a few lead roles and crushed them. First was her role as Eiko Hozuki in Dark Gathering which has become one of my favorite anime of the year, if you haven’t you should check it out. Horror is hard to pull off in anime but Dark Gathering nails it. Karlii Hoch voices the main character, the heretical boss if you will, Pride Royal Ivy, and she does a fantastic job. I loved her work in this and if the rumor I heard about her voicing Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad Isekai anime is true I’m even more excited for that show.

Since 2020 there have been a few villainess otome game isekai that have come out. What was a niche genre has become a bit played out. My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! was the biggest one and I don’t think this series did enough to dethrone it.

The problem with series like this is by the time they start to get going they’re over. Twelve episodes just aren’t enough to tell a complete story, that’s true for recent anime originals too. So once again I feel like this series is just an advertisement to get people to purchase the light novel. I liked this series and loved some of the characters but not enough to get into the light novel. Maybe a second season would change my mind but something tells me that’s not going to happen since this series premiered last year.

It’s not a bad show and if you like villainess isekai you’ll find something here to like I’m sure but outside of that group I’m not sure I can recommend it and I love all isekai. But if you are on an isekai kick and need a fix you could do a lot worse, I just hoped for a bit more.
