English Dub Season Review: Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season Two

Overview:

After being abandoned by Eris, Rudeus is left broken. He tries to put the pieces back together the best he can but he makes some terrible mistakes. Dealing with an embarrassing health condition leads him to enroll at the Ranoa University of Magic with the hope of curing his condition.

Our Take:

I never thought I would see an anime have an arc that is mostly about someone trying to cure their erectile dysfunction. Not only that but they manage to make it worth your time as well. It’s less gross than it sounds because they make it about the psychological aspect of why something like that might happen to someone as young as Rudeus. After he’s abandoned by Eris almost immediately after they had sex he understandably has some hang-ups about it. I’m glad they made it more of an emotional and psychological aspect than anything else because I think it led to some real growth for Rudeus.

There was an episode zero that took place before the season started that was fun but also kind of spoiled the surprise of the character Fitz. So if you don’t want that spoiled then read no further because this character was instrumental in Rudeus’s growth in the season. Fitz ended up being Rudeus’s childhood friend Sylphie. Her kindness and understanding helped cure Rudy’s condition.

Rudeus is a fascinating character because he’s navigating this world with all the thoughts and experiences of his past life. This leads to Rudeus being a fairly divisive character with how interacts with some of the girls in his life. But it also creates some internal conflicts between him and his family. It would be hard to consider someone your father or mother when you have memories of your past family. That’s what made episode twenty-two such a great episode, there were a lot of conflicting feelings and it had huge ramifications for Rudeus and his family.

Studio Bind is on their second season of Mushoku Tensei and they keep getting better. There isn’t a ton of action but when there is it looks fantastic. Honestly, the fight scenes in this series are some of the best I’ve ever seen. Since Bind was created for the Mushoku Tensei project it makes sense that they would pour so much love into it. If they didn’t go all out then that would be embarrassing.

A third season has already been confirmed and I can’t wait. The third season will (hopefully) include some of my favorite parts of the light novel. There are a few things they didn’t include but there’s still time for them to do an OVA but with the inclusion of the zero episode we might not get one. I’m hopeful they’ll include some of those things in season three at the very least, we need to see what Eris has been up to, especially with that tease of her in the final episode. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait too long for more of this series.
