English Dub Review: Ragna Crimson “Light”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Just as Ragna, Crimson, and the Argentum Corps stand at the cusp of victory, the worst-case scenario occurs: Against all odds, Ultimatia reclaims her dominion over time.

Our Take:

This has been one heck of a journey for me regarding Ragna Crimson.  What seemed to be another action fantasy anime I’ll likely forget about in a year turned out to be a bit better than I expected.  It took us many weeks to get to the climax of the season’s ultimate showdown, and I must admit, it didn’t disappoint.  After a satisfying end to Ragna’s battle with Kamui, Ultimatia reached her final breaking point, resulting in her regaining her time powers.  Thankfully, one of the Corps’ twins immediately foiled her plot to erase the confrontation, leaving her to seek shelter from Kamui’s sword to keep her from burning to death.

Whether she survives is uncertain, but we get one final trip to Ultimatia’s past, which leads to her Monarch path.  Following the incident in the previous episode, the young Kamui vowed to repay Ultimatia by helping her escape from her enslaver, the Sun God.  But, it was actually the future version of Ultimatia that saved her from the Sun God’s wrath, leading her to become the Monarch she is in the present.  While Ultimatia’s reign of terror is sadistic, her flashbacks effectively showcase the antagonist’s inner layers, as her ways were caused by her torment of not saving those she wished to save.

Additionally, the season finale reveals that Starlia has survived her inevitable demise since Zora’s magic was good for making chemicals, not poison.  However, that doesn’t mean Ragna’s journey is over, as he, Crimson, and the others have another Monarch bloodline to kill.  This indicates that we might see another season of Ragna Crimson, which I wouldn’t mind watching since the series was surprisingly good.  Even if we don’t get a season two, “Light still serves as a sentimental and rewarding conclusion to Ragna’s character arc, who’s free from the torment of losing those around him after seeing Starlia alive.  As mentioned before, this show has been quite a journey to get through, which I’ll explain further in my upcoming season review.
