English Dub Review: My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered “Instant Death Ability”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
During a school trip, Yogiri and his classmates are summoned to another world.  The students are granted abilities except Yogiri and Tomochika.  Suddenly, a dragon approaches!

Our Take:
Just like clockwork, we’re introduced to another isekai anime where a protagonist suddenly becomes overpowered in another realm.  Thankfully, this one doesn’t involve reincarnation by an unexpected death.  This time, we have a seemingly ordinary high school student, Yogiri, who can kill anyone with a single thought.  Considering his lack of strength and physicality, this ability seemed appropriate, but also pretty lazy.  He didn’t even have to use his magic, fists, or anything.  He can just think of anyone he wants dead and BOOM!  They’re finished before they can say, “Oh shit!”  Yogiri’s sudden ability is first tested during his encounter with a dragon when he and his classmate, Tomochika, are chosen as sacrifices.  Afterward, Yogiri uses it on the other students, including Higashira.
In addition to a brief flashback involving a young Yogiri, the episode also explored how the students came to this particular world, with a mysterious Sage named Sion suddenly appearing and giving them sage abilities.  Unfortunately, Yogiri and Tomochika got the short end of the stick, but only for a short time, thanks to Yogiri’s instant death ability.  The only interesting part of the first episode is that it starts with Yogiri already in OP mode, even before being transported to another world.  This moment alone was enough to elevate its genre formula, but only slightly.  Besides that, this seems like it will be another run-of-the-mill OP isekai series with a few chuckle-worthy character moments, respectable animation, and some hit-and-miss vocal performances.  Of course, this is only the first episode, so I’m not willing to exit this fantasy world yet.
