English Dub Review: Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest “The Sea of Dragons”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Natsu and pals journey underwater to find and seal the Water God Dragon, though they can’t decide exactly what “seal” means. Though they don’t get much time to figure that out as they come across another Dragon Slayer named Kiria, who turns out ot be of the Fifth Generation that gains power from EATING dragons and comes from a guild called Diabolos. They are soon met by the god himself, Mercphobia. Meanwhile, Jellal begins an investigation of Touka, the girl who appeared at Fairy Tail’s base.

OUR TAKE

The quest officially kicks off with the main group getting to their first destination. It’s an interesting enough place, with the people living there turning into fish at night, and then moving to an undersea place gives the cast a chance to swim around without worry of losing breathing (and then later as mostly fish people when the tides figuratively turn on them). Still, maybe it’s nostalgia talking since I haven’t watched it in awhile, but I thought I remembered the opening arcs of the original series being a lot more elaborate and thought out than this. That and it doesn’t help that, as a sequel series, this doesn’t feel like so much of a sequel as it does just a side story for the main story. All the characters feel exactly the same as they did when I stopped watching the show hundreds of episodes before the original story wrapped up, so while I guess it’s nice to feel like I haven’t missed much diving on in to this new show, it also doesn’t make me feel super optimistic about what there is to look forward to with this one. Then again, it’s early days, and they’re still setting up some plotlines to get fleshed out, so we’ll see where that goes.

As for the stuff with the Water Dragon God, it was interesting that the team differed in what they thought sealing it may mean, showing some difference in opinion on what the objective was based on their own personal viewpoints. Not sure if that’s going to lead to much in terms of interesting dynamic shifts or what not, but it’s something. Also, the Dragon Slayer stuff. Of the parts of the original series that I did see, Dragon Slayer Magic was something interesting to keep track of as we met more people who had it, like Natsu, Wendy, and Gajeel. While I dropped off before we met the Saber Tooth guys, I am aware of them being of the Third Generation, so it’s interesting seeing some expansion of that lore with the (as far as I’m aware) introduction of the Fifth Generation with Kiria and Madmole and their guild Diabolos, who will probably be the bad guys of this arc for the foreseeable future. And on top of that, we have a dragon in human form arriving to stir the pot as well, so there’s for sure a lot of stuff to keep my interest for at least a little while longer.
