English Dub Review: Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction “Episode 7”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

On the eve of high school graduation, Ai goes out with a guy before deciding to go onto college. Meanwhile, the Japanese government continues work on anti-mothership weapons, and some soldiers find stranded invaders, killing one of them.

OUR TAKE

We’re back to present day stories dealing with high school stuff and the ever looming mothership, but to my surprise, our first episode back from the flashback has the perspective immediately shift to another one of Kadode and Ouran’s friends, Ai. Much like the episode focusing on Kiho, this is also about one of the girls going on a date with a guy and doing its best to be distant from the alien cold war stuff, only for it to become clear that there’s no escaping it as it is now before said girl makes a decision about her future without said guy. Though in Ai’s case, one of her more distinguishing features is that she has five little brothers, the fourth of deciding to make himself stand out by going with the edgy goth look. That mainly only gets brought up to both remind us of how much Ai loves her brothers and then also give Kadode and Ouran a reason to appear in the episode at all, apparently there to help the Black Knight brother with a video game tournament in the city. That just leaves Rin out of the five in Kadode and Ouran’s friend group who hasn’t gotten a focus episode, which I guess we’ll get sooner or later, probably before the halfway point of the show.

But the other issue is the ongoing military subplot as they continue to work on anti-alien weaponry in the background. We’ve seen that become increasingly apparent over the course of the series so far, most clearly through the big laser that ended up shooting down one of the smaller ships that split off the big ship, one of which probably included the alien couple that was found and killed at the end of this episode. Or at least one of them was killed, with it apparently being revealed that the aliens live in pressurized suits. They look exactly the same as Isobeyon, the alien who gave Kadode and Ouran their “magical items”, but it’s probably just that they all look alike. Yeah, cancel me for that take, see what happens! Anyway, now that the girls are official out of high school, I guess we’ll see where the plot takes them next on their own, or if the “invasion” has now truly begun. Though we should probably give Rin an episode before things get too serious, if only for completion’s sake.
