English Dub Review: Berserk of Gluttony “The Have-Nots”

Overview:

In a world where status and success are defined by divinely granted skills, those blessed with such skills tread upon those less fortunate. Fate Graphite finds himself among the have-nots until a chance encounter activates a hidden ability of his skill.

Our Take:

The beginning of this review is going to sound a lot more negative than I would like to admit but there will be some positives as well. The first negative is once again on Crunchyroll itself, when are they going to get it together and translate on-screen text? Fate’s skills were shown to us but they were in Japanese and if I hadn’t read the light novel I would have been lost.

So as far as first episodes go this was not a strong showing, I think this would have benefitted from a longer first episode to try and hook people. It’s not an isekai but it has the same feeling as an isekai, people have skills and levels. I like stories like that, maybe because it stokes the fire of a gamer in me and gives me tangible evidence for the character’s progression.

The other big negative and it bothered me when I read the novel is that Fate Graphite is one of the dumbest names of a protagonist I’ve ever heard. But if you watch enough anime you will come to know that dumb names are just a part of it. Though this has to be in the top five for sure, now let’s talk about some good.

It’s well animated and I love a good power fantasy. The first episode leaves off in a spot where I would have liked it to continue for people who may or may not give it the three episode rule but it was just intriguing enough for that crowd maybe. If I didn’t know where this goes from here because being a reader I would not be excited after the first episode I’ll say that much.
