English Dub Review: A Journey Through Another World: Raising Kids While Adventuring “Taku Gets Mad”

Overview:

The expedition makes its way through the forest, but something seems off. Far too few monsters are appearing. Then Takumi finally discovers the truth behind the eerie gaze.

Our Take:

We’ll get to that “truth behind the eerie gaze” because that was something else but this episode made me realize this show might have an identity issue down the road. What I mean is, that there are parts of this show that want us to believe that things are bleak and scary but not two seconds later do we see something silly. I’m down with this being a lighthearted, wholesome comedy but the tonal shifts give me a bit of whiplash. Especially with how quickly they come and go.

I also think we need to start getting some clues as to the mystery of who or what the kids are. They got smashed by a giant snake monster and were none the worse for wear. There has to be a story behind them, which is the selling point for this show.

As for the “eerie gaze,” Takumi kept feeling this malicious gaze on him, which almost led to the kids getting hurt. Turns out it was just some guy who is in love with the captain and thought Takumi was trying to steal him away, not to mention the captain is into women not men so it was kind of a pointless anger.
