Report: South Park Is A Billion-Dollar Franchise As Creators Announce Casa Bonita Doc

Amidst the whirlwinds of a buyout offer from Skydance, ViacomCBS is touting the success of all of their content brands, 14 of which are said to have generated revenues of $1 Billion. While at one point a number that was so astronomical Dr. Evil would have laughed at it, it was announced that South Park is one of those brands. The franchise, which just this year has already launched a new console game AND a Paramount+ special, has helped keep show creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker busy with additional successes whether it’s been in merchandising, Broadway, and a restaurant.

You may remember the announcement last year of Matt Stone and Trey Parker purchasing the famed Casa Bonita restaurant that has been a part of South Park lore for years now. The restaurant has since re-launched and has a waiting list of hundreds of thousands of potential patrons. For those who want to get in on the action, a just-announced documentary will have to be your placeholder for now. ¡CASA BONITA MI AMOR! will world premiere at the Tribeca Festival on Friday, June 7th and stream on Paramount+ later this year. From the producers of the Emmy-nominated 6 DAYS TO AIR, the film tracks the rise, fall and revival of the beloved Colorado landmark Casa Bonita.

Casa Bonita opened in 1974 in an unassuming strip mall. The massive “Disneyland of Mexican restaurants” is an Old West and Acapulco-inspired fever dream made famous by its indoor waterfall, cliff divers, and haunted caves. The restaurant was featured in a classic 2003 episode of South Park. When the show’s creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, learn that Casa Bonita might close its doors for good, they attempt to preserve a crumbling piece of their childhood and Denver history.

Following the premiere, Emmy® Award-winning producer, author and host Andy Cohen of Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen will moderate a conversation with director Arthur Bradford and subjects Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the Emmy® and Tony® Award-winning co-creators of South Park and The Book of Mormon.

Casa Bonita, the Greatest Restaurant in the World™, reopened in May 2023 to preview audiences. The restaurant has served over 150,000 guests since and plans to throw open its doors to the general public later this year.

¡CASA BONITA MI AMOR! is directed by Arthur Bradford, produced by Jennifer Ollman. P.H. O’Brien is Director of Photography. Chad Beck (ACE), Devin Concannon and Paul Frost are editors, Bradford and Keith Pizzi are executive producers. Afshin Beyzaee and Vernon Chatman are co-executive producers.
