English Dub Review: The Irregular at Magic High School “Steeplechase Part 2”

Overview

Tatsuya and the other Student Council members were spending their days extremely busy dealing with the sudden change of events for the Nine Schools Competition. However, out of the blue, Tatsuya receives an email from an unknown sender. The email states that the changes in the competition were due to pressure from the JDF and that the Kudou Family was planning to piggyback on the JDF’s order to test out a secretly developed military weapon at the Steeplechase Cross-country Event. This prompts Tatsuya to head to Nara, where the Kudou Family’s stronghold is based, to find out more about the experiments they are conducting.

Our Take

This time around, big reveals begin to unravel that secret weapons are indeed involved in the tournament, with the National Defense Force exerting significant influence. The competition is less about victory and more about advancing various agendas. Tatsuya is determined to investigate, and we see the return of Masaki. The episode has an eerie vibe, with Tatsuya’s investigation taking him to another city to uncover the connection between the competition and the weapons being developed by Kudo.

Tatsuya receives an email revealing the influence of the National Defense Force and the Kushima family’s plan to test weapons at Steeplechase Cross Country. This prompts Tatsuya, along with his sister and maid, to head to Nara to investigate. The tournament’s changes are suspicious, and Maya’s brief screen time shows her scheming as usual. The Kuroba siblings’ public introduction to Tatsuya and Masaki and George’s suspicions about the Steeplechase add to the intrigue.

Overall, this was very dialogue-heavy but ended on quite an ominous note. The tournament arc is heating up, and Tatsuya’s overpowered nature ensures he always has the upper hand. The buildup to the competition and cross-country race sets the stage for future conflicts. With the Kuroba siblings’ intel and Maya’s involvement, the series is poised for exciting developments. Despite some behind-the-scenes machinations, the episode was a great setup for what’s to come.
