English Dub Review: The Irregular at Magic High School “Double Seven Part 4”

Overview
News outlets were enthusiastically reporting the great success of the stellar furnace experiment carried out by the students at First High School. However, since Takuma Shippou had heard from his father that the Saegusa Family was going to be the ones to deal with Diet member Kanda, he thinks they used Tatsuya to claim credit for the experiment’s success themselves. Takuma then takes his pent-up anger out on Kasumi Saegusa, who he happened to pass by on campus. Kasumi, unable to turn a blind eye to these insults against her family, is on the brink of engaging in a magic fight with Takuma… But then, the Disciplinary Committee intervenes before either of them makes their move, and takes them in for questioning. Tatsuya suggests they let them duke it out in an official match to end this mutual enmity between the two once and for all.

Our Take

This time around, the episode centers on a personal rivalry involving the Shippou family. Takuma’s character remains unlikable, but at least the conflict is being resolved through a battle rather than childish bickering. Meanwhile, Tatsuya maintains his business-as-usual demeanor, and the stellar reactor experiment is a major success, garnering widespread attention.

The tension escalates when Shippou accuses the Saegusa family of using Tatsuya to take credit for their achievements, leading to a confrontation with Kasumi. Their duel is interrupted by the disciplinary committee, but Tatsuya proposes a fair magic battle to settle their animosity. This suggestion aims to clear the air and establish clear winners and losers, highlighting Tatsuya’s strategic thinking with hints of new developments and character dynamics to come.

Overall, this episode marked the official end of the “Double Seven” arc and provides a decent blend of character progression, high stakes, and intense action. Shippou’s character possibly arguably receives the most development, potentially setting him on a path to maturity through his encounters with Tomitsuka and Tatsuya, revealing his need for growth. And the post-credits scene which you gotta stay for, and left me hooked on what could happen next!
