OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Taiyo gets his first mission as part of the Yozakura family: protect Mutsumi from a mad bomber.OUR TAKEWith the first episode covering the task of being a textbook shonen intro to a premise, this episode begins introducing us to what will probably be typical of this early arc of the series and lay some hints as to what we’ll see in the future. Taiyo loses his house to the life he has gained by marrying Mutsumi, symbolically showing how he literally can’t go home again and that he is officially one of the Yozakuras. Some things are the same, like going to school, but he’s already showing some changes in personality and his confidence levels as he takes to his new purpose, which is protecting Mutsumi, the current head of the family, until she is able to fully take on the role as head, supposedly when she comes of age. With this shift, his being targeted by Kyoichiro has changed to a one sided rivalry that I’m sure will not get old very fast at all. Though thankfully this gag is offset by the fact that Kyoichiro is a legitimate asset in battle, as well as the fact that his loyalty to the family and Mutsumi now extends to Taiyo, hinting at them possibly gaining some begrudging respect for each other as Taiyo grows as a person, as a spy, and as Mutsumi’s husband. That covers the episode conceptually and what it might be setting up, but how is the episode by itself? Well, it very much follows the recipe of early shonen episodes pretty much to the letter, almost to a fault. So, it accomplishes its task very well, just not in any remarkable or extraordinary way. This first enemy, Tamaya, is pretty typical for what you would expect from a spy battle premise and a model starter enemy. Mysterious hooded guy, has a simple gimmick of using three bombs, keeps Taiyo on his toes enough for him to be mostly able to figure the pattern out, but still shows he has a long way to go to catch up with Kyoichiro, who also acts as a milestone without being a straightforward mentor. Aw man, am I gonna be crying about Kyoichiro dying in 50 chapters? God, I hope not. Well, until we get to that point, this show is starting off…okay. Just okay. Maybe we’ll start getting focus episodes for each of the siblings next, or we’ll get some more standard missions for Taiyo before we start doing that. Either way, I’m moderately looking forward to it.
