OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Helck begins to tell the tale of his past.OUR TAKEHey, we’re finally getting to some important scenes in this show after all this time! Like seriously, ever since the seventh episode, it’s felt like we’ve been spinning our wheels for some reason. Even the brief check in that we got last week was just reiterating a lot of the info we already have, it just felt like a breath of fresh air because reiteration looks great next to Helck and Vermillio’s weird and pointless travels. But we’re here, actually getting some insight into Helck’s backstory that may explain why he despises humans so much and what the truth and facts are behind certain aspects of his reputation. We’re already getting a good reason to not like the humans he deals with as a kid when we see them denying him help for his sick brother, Cless, and then even sending cops after him because it breaks their brain that some poor kid could save up money. I mean yeah Helck, rich nobles can be real assholes, though I hardly think that means their punishment should extend to all of humanity. Still, the kindness of a doctor saves the two of them and leads to Cless’ eventual romance with the doctor’s daughter. That’s why it’s kinda weird to review this one, since it’s only part of the story it wants to tell and I have to review it based on who’s got interests in local development. It’s your typical tragic backstory where they were poor, then they were adapted as regular citizens, and in some cases they just went back to the virtual void. But it looks like this first half is just about how they became adults and had growing disconnects between how to move forward, with Cless becoming a soldier for their kingdom while Helck (who ironically is much stronger) and his brother is very much not. He just kinda stands or sits around with his dumbass haircut. That’s not to say pacifism can’t be found in weird antics like this, but there is a lot of non-zero things that can make it pretty useless at times. Anyway, it looks like next week will be the more eventful of these flashback story, when we see what was a bridge too far for Helck and how he got a goddamn hero killing sword. All that and more as we continue to just…go on our own pace through this weird backstory duology.
