English Dub Review: Helck “The Spirit of Faith”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Azudra and the other demons hold down the fort, literally, as the humans continue their assault and keep resurrecting stronger than before. Meanwhile, Helck reveals to Vermillio he has a broken, but powerful sword called the “Hero Killer” that he tells her to use on him if needed, but she refuses, telling him she’s long gotten over her doubts about him. And then, after the credits, we get five minutes of pointless bullshit.

OUR TAKE

Ooooooh we’re halfway there, oooooooh living on a prayer, take my life so I don’t have to watch mooooooore. Okay, but seriously, this episode was actually a bit of an improvement over the last few, but pretty much only because they spent some time AWAY from Helck and Vermillio. It’s not like there’s not some interesting stuff ABOUT Helck, namely why he hates humans and how said humans became these immortal soldiers, but so far all of what’s related to that has happened AWAY FROM THE TITLE CHARACTER and everything he and Vermillio are doing feel arbitrary to all of that interesting plot stuff. Now, FINALLY, after a MONTH of waiting, we get back to what’s happening with the other demons fighting the humans. There isn’t a whole lot of new or significant information other than they’re all still fighting and the humans are getting stronger, but it’s something that at least feels like it’s important and significant to things moving forward. Heck, I’m glad Helck brought up the Hero Killer, even if I know it’s not gonna actually see any action until it gets to fight an awakened human. Finally, FINALLY, something important is happening and we can get back to doing interesting things…maybe.

I’d actually be giving this a slightly higher score based on all of that…if not for the fact that the five minute post credit scene has the literary nutritional value of PACKING PEANUTS. For the Helck related part of this episode, they are already out of the village they were in and set up camp in the desert. So WHY THE FUCK would you give us FIVE MINUTES AFTER THE CREDITS of them just wandering around random ass parts of the village looking at shit they’re not going to buy, jokes that that make me want to die, and moments that make me wonder “is Helck bi?” I am CONFOUNDED. BEFUDDLED. FLABBERGASTED. What was the POINT of having all of that AFTER THE CREDITS? WHAT DID IT SERVE? WHO DID IT DEVELOP? WHAT IS GOING ON??? I’M LOSING MY GODDAMN MIND HERE!!!!! Ugh. Anyway, it looks like, based on the preview, that next episode will give us some much awaited insight into Helck’s past with his brother and how he was driven to become the human hater we know and…just know in the present day. Maybe then I can give an episode some good scores without any caveats. Boy, that would really be great if I could do that. Don’t you WANT me to do that, Helck?! WHY ARE YOU KEEPING ME FROM LOVING YOU?!
