English Dub Review: BLUE LOCK THE MOVIE -EPISODE NAGI-

Overview:

After demonstrating his overwhelming soccer talent, high school sophomore Seishiro Nagi receives an invitation to the Blue Lock Project and meets strikers from all over the country.

Our Take:

One of the first shows I got to review for this site was the basketball anime Kuroko’s Basketball and I’ve been chasing that hype in a sports anime ever since. The first season of Blue Lock got pretty close and I like how instead of the power of friendship we get the power of selfishness. How big your ego is and how much you want to be the best almost at the detriment to your team decides if you advance or not. If you haven’t seen the first season of the series you technically can watch this movie because it’s almost a recap of sorts but I wouldn’t recommend it because while Nagi is an important character he is not the main character. So you might be a little lost on why certain characters seem more important than they should be, but it will give you an idea of what the Blue Lock program is about.

Nagi is one of my favorite characters in the series so when I saw that the movie would be about him I was excited. My assumption that this was a sequel to the first season was incorrect though which led to me being a bit disappointed because what this ends up being is a first season recap from the point of view of Nagi. One thing it did was put a spotlight on Nagi’s friend, Reo. At first I thought he was just a spoiled brat who was upset he didn’t get what he wanted, which he is, but you he doesn’t view Nagi as just a tool but a friend. When you compare it to how Isagi and Bachira are though, there’s no comparison those two are besties for life.

The second season of Blue Lock was announced to be premiering in October this year so if you need a fix fast then this will get you that. But I don’t think you HAVE to watch it if you don’t want to, even if Nagi is your favorite character. I could be wrong and they did this because the second season focuses more on Nagi but with the information I have right now that’s how I feel.

The animation and voice acting are great just like the series. I love Bryson Baugus as Nagi and that was only reinforced by this movie. If you absolutely NEED to watch something new in the world of Blue Lock you could do a lot worse than this movie.
