Scavengers Reign Canceled By MAX; Netflix Pickup Possible

Later this year at the Cannes Film festival, WB Discovery is getting ready to have at least two panels dedicated to how their company has been shepherding adult animation for TV and film. One is the Annecy Studio Focus Session: Adult Swim – Defying Expectations featuring Kelly Crews-Head of Production, Suzanna Makkos-Executive Vice President of Original Comedy and Adult Animation, and Michael Ouweleen- President of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim while the other is called Annecy Studio Focus Session: Warner Bros. Discovery Adult Animation Showcase which features Peter Girardi-Head of Production at Warner Bros. Animation, Suzanna Makkos-Executive Vice President of Original Comedy and Adult Animation at Max, and Michael Ouweleen-President of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. The irony of course being that one of the best animated series the company has ever produced, Scavengers Reign, is headed to Netflix starting May 31st.

Clearly something’s not working at WB Discovery, David Zaslav recently noted that 2,000 more jobs are going to be cut across the board and it sounds like the MAX streaming service is more interested in bundling with as many of the conglomerates as it possibly can including Prime Video, Disney+, and now Netflix. Furthermore, the company’s anime strategy is going in the wrong direction, they screwed the pooch with their biggest animated franchise, and we have yet to hear if Scavengers Reign is even getting a second season nor any new news about The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim which is supposed to come out later this year. Primal season three is in production on ten episodes at the moment with creator Genndy Tartakovsky promising an anthology series from this season forward and second seasons of Smiling Friends and My Adventures with Superman are premiering this month, but as for streaming, I’m not sure what anyone is going to be gleaning from WB Discovery at the Annecy Animation Festival on 14th June 2024 at 12pm CEST.

Update 5pm ET: Scavengers Reign was canceled by MAX and is headed to Netflix for a potential renewal for a second season.
