Review: The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish “Fly”

Overview

Little Hazel Wells finds it difficult to adjust to her new life, with her brother not around; when she tries to run away from home, she finds out her weird neighbors, Cosmo and Wanda, are fairy godparents in disguise.

Our Take

There is not a network in the world that loves more than to reboot its classics into a 2.5D animation aesthetic produced in Europe more than Nicke-fuck-a-lodeon. It’s almost like clockwork that this conglomerate of content will eventually go through all of its franchises just to give it a once-over, tack on an extended title, and have at it. It kind of makes you wonder about all of this ViacomCBS being acquired talk that has been going around for several weeks now.

In any event, I actually prefer this reboot to the somewhat formulaic Fairly OddParents OG series. For starters I find Ashleigh Crystal Hairston’s take on “Hazel” far more nuanced and entertaining than I ever did in the other series. Moreover, the updated animation presentation seems quite a bit fresher, with more lush settings and better character designs than the previous series. The kids in school, maybe a tad cliche, but more vibrant in their execution. Even Wanda and Cosmos’ more grown-up take I find more enjoyable than the old-school fly-arounds they did in the original series (that we also get a montage of).

Overall, The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish is a pretty good re-do of an already established franchise. The contemporary presentation and fresh setting should give the producers a lot to work with in what could be a decent future.
