English Dub Review: Vampire Dormitory “Love 4. The pretty boy becomes friends.”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Ruka must find his “destined partner,” but he finds himself still attracted to Mito. To suppress his feelings, Ruka suggests that Mito gets a girlfriend. At a mixer, Mito gets approached by a beautiful lady and receives an unexpected confession, but…

Our Take:

Mito’s first camping trip with her new friends didn’t exactly go as planned, not just because of the lack of fireworks. In addition to Mito’s secret almost getting exposed by Ren, she and Ruka find themselves having feelings for each other, jeopardizing Ruka’s actual goal. That goal was revealed in last week’s episode, with him saving his love for his “destined partner”.  From the looks of it, Mito doesn’t quite fit that bill despite Ruka’s questionable affection toward her.

This week’s episode sees Ruka constantly avoiding Mito for a week, leaving Mito concerned about the lack of blood he drinks. But, in reality, Ruka was trying to provide some space to prevent his odd behavior from worsening. Afterward, Ren invites Mito on a shopping spree in the town square, where Mito comes across a woman’s clothing store. This resulted in her trying out a new dress while questioning whether Ruka would pay more attention to her if she were wearing the dress. After saving Mito from the ladies hoping to take a peek at her, Ruka confesses that he loves her as a friend, changing her necklace’s color to orange. So, it looks like they’re finally making some progress with their love goals despite Mito’s blood now tasting like molten strawberries.

But, of course, this means that Ruka is growing more affectionate based on how long he took to suck Mito’s blood. So, he decides to get Mito a girlfriend via a mixer. It turns out to be a success due to the purple-haired girl, Maina, choosing to spend time with Mito. However, things go south when Maina tells her that she actually has a crush on Ruka, and she only chose her so she could ask her if he’s single. It’s possible Maina could be Ruka’s “destined partner”, but I’m not willing to jump to conclusions just yet.

The episode made a small progress regarding Mito’s necklace. More importantly, it makes Mito and Ruka’s struggles more interesting through the show’s humor and character moments, mainly Mito questioning her hidden identity. My only gripe with this episode is the single line of dialogue in the English dub that was corny and repetitive. Other than that, it’s a friendly continuation that continues to take advantage of some of the show’s romantic tropes.
