English Dub Review: The Irregular at Magic High School “Double Seven Part 1”

Overview

A notice has been sent to the magic high schools across the country that a portion of the events in the Nine Schools Competition will be changed. Shockingly, three of the six events will be changed. In order to respond to the sudden change in events, First High School’s Student Council is thrown in a frenzy to understand the new rules, re-selecting athletes and readjusting their magical devices.

While everyone was complaining about the Competition’s management due to the sudden change in timing, one month before the start of the Nine Schools Competition, Tatsuya had a growing suspicion about the strong military flavor of all the newly added events…

Our Take

After a challenging year, The Shiba siblings, Tatsuya and Miyuki enter their second year as students, now sharing their home with Minami Sakurai, sent by the Yotsuba Family. Tatsuya enrolls in the new Department of Magical Engineering and takes on the role of acting student council Vice President, hoping for a peaceful school life.

While it took me a while to binge-watch and research this series in advance to refresh what I remembered from this show. And looking beyond some of the controversial stuff it’s known for, the crisp animation and return of familiar characters helped the proceedings in terms of compensating. However, the arrival of three disruptive students from prestigious Numbered families disrupts this tranquility, setting the stage to mix things up…

Overall, this season premiere worked in terms of reminding people what they loved about the series with its charm, strong animation, and the introduction of 3 new students helps add new layers of humor and conflict. Particularly through their interactions with the aforementioned siblings. But the real question is, what magical conspiracies will rear their ugly head, and how will Tatsuya and the gang handle them going forward?
