English Dub Review: Mashle: Magic and Muscles “Mash Burnedead and the Tall Tower”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Mash wins against Macaron, but Innocent Zero unexpectedly appears from the sky and freezes time in the exam venue.  Wahlberg confronts Innocent Zero.  Kaldo, other Divine Visionaries, and prefect Margarette, now unfrozen, face off against monsters to protect the students.  At the same time, a battle between Mash and Cell War unfolds!

Our Take:

The Divine Visionary Exam has ended, with Mash emerging victorious against the unhinged Margarette. However, this also means the real battle has begun, with Innocent Zero crashing the party and freezing time. Unfortunately for Mash, Innocent Zero’s ability seemed to be the only thing he couldn’t counter with his muscle magic. Lucky for us, Wahlberg is ineffective against Innocent Zero’s time-stop ability.

How Wahlberg resisted the powerful spell is unknown, so I will assume his magic kept him alive.  Following the brief introduction to Zero’s goal, the remaining episode kickstarts the showdown with Wahlberg unfreezing Mash, Lance, Dot, Kaldo, Orter, and Margarette so they can fight off Innocent’s allies and demonic henchmen.  During that time, Wahlberg and Innocent were transported to a safer distance to confront one another without any distractions.  In the meantime, Mash sets off to battle Cell War and his tall, spiky tower, which he quickly disposed of with his kicks.  At the same time, Dot and Lance are left to battle one of Innocent’s allies, Sitter Baby, who transformed them into infants, reducing most of their magic. This is another moment that emphasizes the show’s outlandish humor regarding Sitter Baby’s ability and Dot and Lance being surprisingly adorable in their infant forms.

Amid the struggle, the episode reveals the truth behind the relationship between Innocent and Wahlberg, setting the stage for what could be the most intense fight of the series.  Innocent and Wahlberg were both students to the most powerful mage in history, Adam, emphasizing their magical strengths.  This information, along with Innocent’s forbidden spell and Mash being his son, could make for an exciting showdown between former friends that might affect the series going forward. With its entertaining blend of slapstick comedy and heart-pumping action, “Mash Burnedead and the Tall Tower” sets the stage for an epic showdown in the show’s second season.
