OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Wolf tries to keep his cool with Honeybee’s mom but is constantly overcome by his anxiety caused by his weird history with his own mom. Later, Beef tries to save a local bar from going under by getting drunk for a big tournament of Tug of War.OUR TAKEWe get a double stuffed night for The Great North this week, and luckily for us, both episodes turned out to be pretty dang good, AND having two plots to talk about means I can fit reviewing both into the minimum word count! So, the first one is ANOTHER Wolf and Honeybee episode, but really more of a Wolf episode as he is the one who needs to get over something. Specifically, we get into what his relationship with his mother Kathleen was like, with her apparently only giving him attention when he acted out, leading him to transfer that thought process to Honeybee’s mother. Kathleen has always been an interesting non-character in this show because her ghost is very much present when some of the Tobins have an insecurity or personal issue, as well as a dark or sad joke that can be tossed into a conversation. I don’t think we ever got much detail about her and Wolf before now, so chalk that up to another way of fleshing Wolf out, as well as a heartwarming moment when it’s clear he’s already won over his new mother-in-law. I kinda wonder if there’s any other character who hasn’t gone into their damaged bond with Kathleen. Heck, maybe the sign the show has really jumped the shark is if Kathleen actually shows up.The other episode is mostly a Beef episode, but interestingly was made before the Carissa episodes, at least based on the production numbers, so that’s why she’s not here. But it is related to that in the sense that it is partially about Beef learning to accept being happy and having fun, which connects to him seeking out connections with others like in the other episodes I mentioned. It’s also just a fun episode overall, with Beef working hard to repay a debt for the bar by winning that Tug of War competition. He even makes it to the finals before his drunkenness sets in and he goes rogue, which his family knows will make him feel terrible when he sobers up. So instead, they make use of his drunken self’s inability to refuse a dare to ALSO make all that money, showing Beef that him having fun and enjoying life will not be the end of the world. So yeah, two solid 8/10 episodes about wholesome and fun Tobin psychological revelations which will make you feel all warm and fuzzy. Which is good because the temperature is about to GO WAY UP.
