English Dub Review: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End “Conquering the Labyrinth”

Overview:

The aspiring first-class mages now face their second test: conquering the Ruins of the King’s Tomb. A simple task, or so the proctor claims, but there’s a reason this particular dungeon remains unexplored.

Our Take:

I think Frieren and how she interacts with mimics might be my favorite thing of the season. She has a spell that can essentially tell whether a chest is a mimic or not with 99.9% accuracy and yet she still ends up in their mouths more often than not. Her curiosity knows no bounds and it gets her into trouble here but no character is perfect and her flaws make her ability for destruction even more enjoyable.

What really puts into perspective just how powerful Frieren is was the end of the episode. One of the traps of the tomb, or perhaps it’s a monster, but either way there is something that can create a perfect copy of the mages taking the test. For the most part this problem is handled easily enough, but when one of the groups encounters a copy of Frieren you can begin to understand what it might be like to be on the opposite end of Frieren’s power.
