English Dub Review: The Demon Prince of Momochi House “Mayoiga”

Overview (Spoilers Below): Himari is determined to settle into life at Momochi House, which won’t be as easy as it sounds. The residents are still resistant to her, and her presence seems to be taking a toll on Aoi…

Our Take: Himari has made herself at home due to inheriting the Momochi House. But, of course, it isn’t without a few “roommates” she has to deal with, and by that, I mean a bunch of supernatural spirits that claim it as their territory. So, it makes sense for Himari to be the house’s landlord for Aoi and his shikigami allies. However, thanks to the yokai, they seem to have taken care of the fire, water, and food. Regardless, there are still many secrets within the house and its guardians that need to be uncovered, including Himari’s unexpected power and Aoi himself. The episode showcases more of the show’s concept through Aoi, who’s revealed to be chosen as the guardian of the Momochi house. He became the Omamori-sama when he accidentally broke the house’s seal when he was young, but it came with the cost of being trapped in the house’s premises for seven years. But at least he got Yukari and Ise as company, but for Himari, that’s not good enough for him to feel at ease. Additionally, it turns out that Himari was supposed to be the house’s Omamori-sama before Aoi accidentally took on the role himself. So, it appears that Himari and Aoi will have to share the same duty until she finds a solution to get Aoi back into the human world. “Mayoiga” further showcases the series having a sitcom-like vibe involving Himari sharing the same house with her unexpected roommates. This was proven in the scene involving Himari pushing Ise out of the house twice with her ability, which was admittedly humorous considering Ise’s grumpy personality. However, it also has a couple of character-driven moments to balance the comedy, including Aoi rescuing Himari from the Ayakashi inside the cherry blossom tree. There’s also Himari’s determination to help Aoi as he helped her, which could serve as the driving force of their friendship. Those elements help provide some enjoyment in the yokai-fantasy series that would hopefully continue in later episodes.
