English Dub Review: Solo Leveling “I’m Used to It”

Overview:

Sung Jin-woo is the weakest hunter, but he has no choice to fight and survive.

Our Take:

It has been ten years since gates appeared that connect our world to another dimension. A new career, hunting, spawned from this and it has become the hottest career around. Hunters travel through the gates, defeat monsters and collect valuable essence stones.

Sung Jin-woo is the weakest of these hunters, but he has to fight in order to support his family. He needs to pay for his mother’s medical treatment and his sister’s college tuition. However, he always gets badly wounded in raids and his friend Joo-Hee always has to heal him.

Jin-woo and his party go on a raid that proves to be more of a challenge than any of them expected. In fact, it will change all of their lives forever.

The animation in this show is very well done. A-1 Pictures has a pretty good track record, so it’s good to see this lives up to their standards. I also like the character designs and the action is handled well too. There are a couple of gruesome scenes that are pretty impactful. The voice acting is solid too. Although, there are no standout performances for me just yet.

This episodes does a good enough job at introducing the premise and the characters. I would have liked it to go into a few others characters a little more, but I’m sure it will in time.

This premiere doesn’t blow me away, but it does at least intrigue me. I’ve heard a lot of hype surround Solo Leveling, so I’m curious to see where it goes from here and if it can live up to it.
