English Dub Review: Ragna Crimson “Wing”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Ragna met Ultimatia before in another life, and he did not emerge from that encounter unscathed. Now, in this life, dragons are disappearing, and Ultimatia needs to know why.

Our Take:
Ultimatia may seem like a kind and harmless angel on the outside. However, she’s still a dragon monarch whose methods of killing humans are vastly inhuman. This was further proven in this episode, in which she sends Monarch Woltekamui (the episode’s comic relief) to investigate and kill the people responsible for the recent deaths. Ultimatia knows that Monarch Dornea’s death was caused by King Femud’s daughter, Princess Starlia, so we all know that she’s screwed. However, as the episode suggested, Ultimatia also happens to be the one responsible for transforming Future-Ragna into a Monarch, at least in that timeline. This indicates that the Monarchs were once humans before becoming monstrous dragon hybrids.
With how dangerous this angel-winged dragon is, this gives Ragna and Crimson the perfect reason to kill her next as they head into Capital City, where the army’s propaganda pacifies its citizens through their dragon corpses. However, the only problem that could interfere with their journey aside from Ultimatia is Ragna’s paranoia of being in crowds. Without Leonica to comfort him, Ragna has difficulty being around a large group of people, further showcasing the importance of Ragna’s relationship with his young, skilled partner. Lucky for him, there aren’t as many people in Capital City as the duo thought, although that could mean that Ultimatia has already started her “painless” killing spree upon the village. Unfortunately for Ragna, that doesn’t stop him from puking all over the streets.
With the tender yet twisted dragon’s nefarious plan in motion, Ragna and Crimson are now racing against the clock to stop her. Additionally, the episode introduces us to Crimson’s other servants: Golem, under the alias of Lieutenant General Rowan, and Chimera, a shapeshifter. If they play a part in the next few episodes, I’m hoping they’ll be better than Slime because his child-like voice is starting to annoy me. Fortunately, that’s still the only thing disrupting my experience with the series so far, as this episode provided a decent start to Ragna’s confrontation with his new formidable foe.
