English Dub Review: Dead Mount Death Play “The Karma”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Civil confronts Solitaire, hoping to provoke a confrontation with the Fire-Breathing Bug, but he may get his wish sooner than planned. Meanwhile, the Corpse God plots a rescue mission.

Our Take:
Civil and the crew are on a mission to take out the Fire-Breathing Bug, and they’re packing serious heat thanks to Lulu’s tremendous elemental abilities. Even worse, the real Polka is witnessing it for himself as he’s held hostage by the mighty otherworldly team. Fortunately for him, The Corpse God and the others plan to rescue him, even if it means going up against Civil. However, based on what we’ve seen from Civil and the gang in the previous episodes, it won’t be as easy as the Corpse God’s last fight in the cour one finale. On the bright side, though, it would make for an enticing conclusion to this reverse isekai series with enough bright spots to keep me engaged.
“The Karma” is the tip of that enthralling iceberg as we’re nearing the anticipated showdown between the Corpse God and Civil. However, it’s also not without a few heartfelt moments to accompany its reveals and surprises. One comes from the Corpse God and Xiaoyu, who discuss Xiaoyu’s struggle to live up to Rozan’s expectations. By the way, did you know that Xiaoyu has a sister? I didn’t realize that until this episode, although she’s only appeared in one sequence where she’s confronting the Matriarch. It’s hard to say how big of a role she’ll have later, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she winds up being a regular for a potential second season since we’re nearing the end of this season. There’s also one with the Corpse God chatting with Misaki about how their encounter led them to this moment, which is an endearing way of showing how far they’ve come since they first met.
Amid those moments, “The Karma” offered some intriguing reveals that could play a part in the final two episodes. One is that the Fire-Breathing Bug is seeking revenge against the people who experimented on them, and the other is that Civil hopes to return to the other world, as he’s revealed to be the body made for Sabaramond. The last reveal happens at the end of the episode, which involves Polka’s mother. What could that even mean? Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long to find the answer.
