English Dub Review: BUCCHIGIRI?! “Merge?! Fall in Love with Fortune Bang Bang Chicken!”

Overview:

Arajin Tomoshibi transfers to a new high school and it’s not what he was expecting.

Our Take:

Arajin Tomoshibi is starting life at a brand new high school. The school looks run down and there are always fights between the rival gangs: Minato Kai and Siguma Squad. Arajin just wants to meet a cute girl, which he does. He starts to talk with his classmate Mahoro Jin and it seems like they hit it off.

Meanwhile, Arajin find out that his childhood friend, Matakara Asamine, also attends his school. He’s a member of Minato kai and he looks up to Arajin. For some reason though, Arajin always tries to avoid him.

Arajin later comes in contact with a djinn named Senya. He tells Senya that his wish is to lose his virginity and Senya agrees to help him. Arajin goes on a date with Mahoro and that’s where things get crazy.

This episode is a wild ride. I know what the deal is with the setting, but these high school gangs run the town. The school is in bad shape. There’s a lot of damage, graffiti all over the walls and the students just constantly fight. Nobody seems to care though. There’s no discipline and this is just accepted. I don’t know how I feel about that concept, but it’s at least interesting.

This episode is pretty funny. I like a lot of the characters so far, mainly just based on how enjoyable they are to watch in this episode. Arajin’s mom is the best by far. She’s hilarious and it’s a shame that she’s a side character. The worst so far is Mahoro. She seems nice at first, but she’s actually a psycho with an older brother complex. At least he has a cool character design and she’s voiced by Lindsay Seidel, who I’m a fan of.

The show looks great. This is another MAPPA production though, so that’s to be expected. Even so, I’m digging the vibe. It kind of has a Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure feel to it with the exaggerated action and facial expressions. Overall, this is a really fun episode and I can’t wait to see what else this show has in store.
