English Dub Review: Goblin Slayer “Jungle Cruise”;“Heart of Darkness”

Overview:

Goblin Slayer and the crew have encountered the Mokele Mubenbe and, much to their surprise, it’s being ridden by a goblin. After capturing Mokele Mubenbe Goblin Slayer decides to head upstream in search of the goblins’ nest.

While searching the abandoned building, Goblin Slayer and the others come upon a goblin horde led by a shaman presumed to be the one who was controlling Mokele Mubenbe. The adventurers press the attack but are overwhelmed by the shaman’s magic.

Our Take:

Crunchyroll is really dropping the ball with the onscreen subtitles. Normally I can let it go and chalk it up to me just being whiny. That’s usually because the things we miss aren’t a big part of the story or what’s going on. Occasionally it is but for the most part it isn’t, but in this episode that didn’t seem to be the case. High Elf Archer had a whole conversation with her sister in elvish and the onscreen text was Japanese. Look, I will give a company a lot of slack, a lot more than I probably should but it’s getting to the point where it’s a bit ridiculous. This is a massive company that has a huge piece of the anime pie and that is the most basic of things that needs done. It’s annoying have to spend so much time talking about it.

Goblin Slayer got to do what he does best and hunt goblins. Between the technical issues and this devolving into what it normally is I can’t help but feel a little disappointed. I understand the series is called “Goblin Slayer” so I shouldn’t be surprised when he spends the episode slaying goblins. But sometimes it’s nice to get a little break and I thought that’s what this arc was going to be and it wasn’t.
