English Dub Review: Girlfriend, Girlfriend “Nights with the Girlfriends; Unyielding Feelings”

Overview“Nights with the Girlfriends”Rika moves in with Naoya and the others and insists that sleeping in the same room with him in a non-sexual fashion should be completely permissible. Naoya agrees, but only if all the girls get to take turns sleeping in his room in a non-sexual fashion…“Unyielding Feelings” Saki wants to go to the beach, but the conversation about the trip is interrupted by Mirika drying her bra out so that Naoya can see it. One thing leads to another, and the girls are soon competing to see whose bra excites Naoya the most…Our Take This time around, Crunchyroll felt the need to release two dubbed episodes at once this week with the former episode picking up immediately from the previous one where Mirika makes an enticing proposition to Naoya. For the next 5 months, she will prove her love to Naoya, and if Naoya fails to fall for her during that time, she’ll leave them alone for good. As a greeting, Mirika gives a kiss to Naoya, prompting an immediate outburst from Saki. Mirika enters Naoya’s room and declares that they will platonically share the same room and sleep together. Naoya, with the condition of “anything but intimate activities is okay,” reluctantly agrees to share a bed. However, to ensure fairness, it’s decided that Saki, Nagisa, Mirika, and Shino will take turns sleeping with Naoya, each one on a different night. A game of rock-paper-scissors determines who gets to sleep with Naoya first… What will be the outcome?! For the other episode, we get an “obligatory Beach Episode” that most Anime often have. Still, this one works in the narrative because Saki wants to go on a Summer Beach Trip, but given their limitations the closest to that experience within Japan is a two-day trip to Okinawa. Predictably, we do get some comedic set-pieces either invading women’s undergarments or bathing suits. Still, Mirika isn’t an Idiot and starts to see through Shino’s feelings with plans for a unique alliance…Overall, both episodes were entertaining and compelling in different ways. The revelation of the events from the previous night, leading to Mirika’s complete turnaround, was brilliantly executed. She ended up playing herself. It seems like everyone is underestimating Shino’s true capabilities. And while I’m fully aware that Mirika committed literal crimes/felonies in the series thus far the way she manipulated Shino felt like the worst thing she has done so far. It also felt a bit out of character since the previous two episodes she wasn’t as sinister as we were led to believe. Now this Shino is in a potentially compromising position how will this play out??
