English Dub Review: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End “A Powerful Mage” “Winter in the Northern Lands”

Overview:

Frieren’s many years of training under her teacher Flamme are tested in her confrontation with Aura the Guillotine. Will Aura’s scales find her wanting?

Frieren and her companions continue their journey through the northern lands, but obstacles both natural and manmade still stand in their way.

Our Take:

I haven’t done this in a while but it’s been a minute since I talked about the OP of an anime and this is one I have to talk about. The song is called “The Brave” by YOASOBI and first off I love this group. Not only do I have many of their songs in my anime playlist, but some aren’t linked to any anime I’ve started listening to. Do yourself a favor and listen to their song “Into the Night” you won’t regret it. The music bops and the imagery is fantastic. One of the best parts of the opening is how it shows both of the parties Frieren has been a part of and the only thing they have in common is Frieren. This has been a stellar anime from top to bottom even the opening is well thought out.

Typically, anime protagonists are kind and caring and often treat their enemies better than they would be treated. Unfortunately for Aura, the Guillotine, Frieren never got that message because she did not regard Aura’s life. As soon as she had control of Auro through her scales she told her to kill herself and because of the outcome of the scales she had to.

I’m a little uncomfortable with portraying an entire race of people as evil and maybe it’s my anime experience that makes it a bit odd for me but the demons of this series seem to be evil through and through. I know for something called a “demon” that should be a no-brainer but shows like Yu Yu Hakusho have shown me that sometimes that isn’t always the case. Whatever you do, don’t tell Frieren that because she will kill every demon she comes into contact with.
