December 18, 2023

Overview (Spoilers Below): A fight between a Shinoyama enforcer and Civil’s bodyguard brings an abrupt end to the mysterious visitor’s interview with the Corpse God. But will he really leave in peace? Meanwhile, Solitaire’s latest scheme causes a stir.

Our Take: The meeting between the Corpse God and Civil’s crew was anything but ordinary. However, from the looks of this week’s episode, it seemed that it’s not getting any better. “The Spirit” continues where the previous episode left off, with Taigai, Shinoyama’s enforcer, battling Civil’s muscular bodyguard, Hoboroki, in a brief yet serviceable showdown. It’s also revealed that Kocho was responsible for leading Taigai to the apartment due to her ongoing investigation involving the Corpse God. So, for those who don’t like Kocho’s presence, I am sorry. However, that’s not the only shocking thing that’s happened in the episode, as we learned something new about the mysterious Civil. It turns out that Civil is part of the bastard children of Sabaramond due to him using the same magic as Arius Sabaramond from the Corpse God’s home world. He even almost looks like Arius, too, so I’m assuming they’re both the same person. But that’s not even the worst part. The real Polka has been abducted by Civil’s crew, who hopes to find a connection between Polka and the Corpse God, meaning that he would have to get used to seeing the gang in bloody action. Yes, I do mean that in a literal sense. It also doesn’t help that Solitaire and his new partner, Hikaru, have created a television channel to spread the word about Sabaramond, which captured Civil’s attention. “The Spirit” gives me a taste of what Civil and his allies can do regarding their abilities, and they’ve proven to be more challenging than Momoya. However, none of these two can compare to the power Lulu has. Due to her being possessed by a dangerous elemental, Lulu gains telepathic abilities, which she unexpectedly uses to kill several of her opposers. It’s always the timid ones that are the most dangerous. If Lulu’s that much of a threat, this could be an enticing way to conclude the show’s first season regarding the showdown between the Corpse God and Civil.
