English Dub Review: The Ancient Magus’ Bride “Needs must when the devil drives. II”

Overview:

Violet and Chise host an after-hours test of courage for their classmates by having them pair up to visit various haunted locations around campus. Still, the evening leads to some revealing conversations.

Our Take:

As I’ve stated this has become one of my “comfy” shows. The setting is so cozy (magical creatures attempting to kill people aside) that it’s hard not to feel that way. But maybe I got too cozy because it seemed like there were a few characters that were in prominent roles in this episode that I don’t really remember at all. I’m sure they had a few interactions, but one character in particular that seemed very important that I felt was the first time I saw was Veronica.

If you’ve been paying attention to Philomela and her tragic backstory you’d know that she is just being used by her family. What I didn’t know until this episode was that she is an attendant of sorts for Veronica. There was a pretty gross flashback scene where Philomela was throwing up some sort of sludge-looking stuff.

Apparently, she was a poison tester for Veronica but after learning this I have so many questions. Why is Veronica being targeted like that in the first place? I think this has to be the first time we’ve seen her because I love Alexis Tipton and that’s who voices Veronica. As much as I love Chise I have to say that during this arc a lot of the side characters have held my attention a bit more.
