OverviewThe gang is heading out to the fireworks festival. After a failed experiment (which was not Nagisa’s fault), Shino decides that Saki and Naoya need to have their first kiss with the fireworks display helping to set the mood. Our Take In the tradition of most Japanese Young high school romance stories, we now have the obligatory episode that takes place during a yearly summer fireworks festival. And it’s here where it’s become a point of contention between most of the female leads (except for Nagisa since she’s more willing to move aside for Saki’s sake for her one moment) as the heart of this episode/story arch is that Saki has never had her first kiss with Naoya despite being the first woman in his life, yet two other women doing that before him last season. During the festival, Naoya of course has to help everyone before he goes for the main objective, it’s admirable, and it would be very hard to leave a crying Shino behind if you ask me, and it wouldn’t be a Shino bit without some more accidental fanservice. And it was really interesting to hear why Naoya didn’t reject Nagisa for Saki’s sake, yeah it’s still silly but I kinda understand what he means, and hey it’s worked out so far so I guess he made the right choice. And lastly, the moment with Mirika near the end was shockingly emotional at first, I thought we were seeing the official rejection of Mirika for a second but it ended up being revealed that Naoya has been avoiding Mirika so that he doesn’t fall in love with her. It has me wondering if the harem route is possible… Overall, this was an episode for fans of every girl, well maybe except Nagisa but she had a few moments. While I do appreciate Shino doing her best to try and get Saki to have her first kiss, although, in cliched fashion, she felt overwhelmed and bailed out, promising to try it during the fireworks festival instead. Later on during the festival, Naoya makes a speech to Shino about being true to what he wants even if it’s abnormal, etc. As for the Mirika segment, I’m just glad this didn’t result in a sad Mirika as Naoya’s reasons for turning her down gave her a small modicum of hope even if I don’t know what’s going to happen in later storylines. With this being a two-parter of sorts, I look forward to seeing more of Saki and Nagisa with him at the festival next time!
