OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Fionna and Cake find themselves back in their own world and ready for it to change, but learn from talking to Gary and Marshall Lee that that’s something not everyone would want. Even worse, Scarab finds his way inside and begins destroying things himself, while Simon is stopped from using the crown by Golb Betty and goes on a journey of his own.OUR TAKEWe’ve come to the end of the road, at least for now, for Fionna and Cake. After searching for what they thought would help their world and maybe Simon, the true lesson found is that they just needed to do what was actually best for everyone, which was being able to fight for what existed and make it into its own proper universe, disconnected from Simon’s brain in the first place. While I saw a bit of that coming, namely in that the solution couldn’t just be making Simon into Ice King again and calling it a day, it’s still really cool to see as not only does Fionna get to see how her world has self-actualized, but also helps to fight for it herself. And at the same time, it’s not just left the same way as it is at the beginning of the season, and even has its own multiversal guests in it (although who knows why Destiny, Jay, and Baby Finn are even there). The magic has returned to Fionna’s world, just not in the way that most would have expected, and a whole load of new adventures are laid out in front of them. And as for Simon, his part of this last leg of the journey is DEFINITELY not what I expected. Not only do we check back in with Beth and Shermy, the two Finn and Jake-like characters from the final episode of the original run of Adventure Time, we also use them to show how Simon and Betty’s paths have been basically dictated by Simon’s need to sacrifice himself the entire time. And while it would be nice to revisit the past and attempt to change it, the past is where their relationship is now. Plus, even if he went to another universe where they were together, that still wouldn’t be his Betty. HIS Betty is now a giant four eyed god monster because she chose to save him. In the end, it’s good that Simon is trying his best to live in the world that he’s got, as well as keep in contact with Fionna and Cake. I would’ve liked to have seen one more check in with Older Finn, but a cameo by his mom is fine too. And maybe if this season does well, this won’t be the last we see of the people in Ooo. Or at least that’s what I hope.
