English Dub Season Review: Masamune-kun’s Revenge R

Overview:

With the tumultuous cultural festival behind him, Masamune Makabe continues his efforts to carry out his revenge: to make the “Cruel Princess” Aki Adagaki deeply fall for him and then immediately dump her. As his class is going on a trip to Paris, widely known as the City of Love, Masamune has the perfect opportunity to get even for his childhood heartbreak.

Our Take:

If you watched the first season of this anime back in 2017 you might have never thought you would get a finale for it. I was one of those people as well, I was so intrigued to see how this one ended that I broke down and read the manga. I remember there was a time that I refused to ever read manga but so many anime have broken my heart by not giving me closure. When I heard that Masamune-kun’s Revenge was finally going to get a continuation I was overjoyed. Not only that but it had been so long since I read the manga that I forgot just enough to still be surprised by watching it.

There was really only one negative for me and that was the final episode. Everything was wrapped up well and I enjoyed how it ended but it felt incredibly rushed. I know I mentioned not remembering all of the manga but I know that some stuff was left out and it just felt a bit disjointed. It also felt a bit abrupt and like most romance anime it ends right when the characters get together. I know that Aki and Masamune were technically dating before this but this was when they finally admitted the truth of their real feelings. Not a deal breaker but does keep it from reaching rom-com perfection in my eyes.

One of the best parts was that everyone reprised their roles including Jessie James Grelle who has more harem anime roles than just about anyone at this point. This isn’t much of a harem anime but it has some elements and I want to count it. In this part of the story we get to experience a lot more emotion from Aki and I have to say that the performance by Morgan Laure Garrett was masterful. Everyone did a great job and it was one of the biggest highlights of the series.

I wouldn’t call myself a “romance” expert but it is one of my most-watched anime genres. Before I start a new anime I often do a search to see if there is any romance in it before I make my decision. So I would like to think I have a decent idea of the good ones and this is one of the best because we got an actual conclusion. I also review the anime Rent-a-Girlfriend and my enjoyment is a night and day difference between these two. If you have to choose then I can’t recommend this one much more.
