English Dub Review: The Great Cleric “Trouble in St. Shurule”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Luciel runs into trouble in the streets of the capital, and an altogether different danger awaits him in the depths below the city…

Our Take:
It looks like Luciel will have his hands full as we’re nearing the end of the season. It’s not just because he attempts to defeat the mysterious labyrinth and quit drinking the foul “Substance X”. It’s also because of what’s occurring between his dungeon quests, mainly a visit from his old friends from Maritoni, Monika and Nanaella. During their stay, Luciel learns from them that they’re not the ones chosen to get engaged, much to his relief. Sadly, he also discovers the cause of the ladies not responding to his letters: the local guild master forgot to send them to Luciel. For his sake, it’s better than being ghosted by his girlfriends/potential lovers.
In addition to reuniting with his old friends, Luciel unexpectedly gains a new one: Sheila. Sheila is a mute beast-folk girl from Yenice City who tasked him with healing her father and the townsfolk after being attacked by bandits. Sheila couldn’t speak because her vocal cords were damaged from a childhood accident, so Luciel cast an experimental spell called “Extra Heal” to gradually repair them. Luciel’s successful healing session allowed Sheila’s father to convince the Pope to open a healer’s guild in Yenice, further pushing society to be more accepting of the group.
Afterward, the episode showcases Luciel spending several months training with Lumina to prepare himself for the floor 40 boss. The boss is a skeleton knight who was previously a well-known knight named Templar. Fortunately for the healer, the battle against the boss lasted a week. The amount of time for the boss may be shorter than the time he spent training with the paladins, but it’s also equally exhausting considering the boss’s power level. Eventually, Luciel gains a spellbook that was dropped by the boss, which he’ll probably need for what’s lying ahead. With the labyrinth’s only exit sealed up, Luciel has nowhere else to go except the mysterious 50th floor.
Overall, the episode is another source of repetition, with Luciel healing adventurers and fighting through the dungeon floors. However, it offers a sweet and mildly amusing reunion between Luciel, Monika, and Nanaella, as well as another generous act from Luciel regarding Sheila. It also showcased Luciel facing a difficult challenge from the wight in floor forty, which is enough to emphasize Luciel’s determination to fight for a better life. Of course, the floor 50 boss could be stronger than what Luciel faced several floors ago, meaning the show may have a chance to provide an enticing finish to the season.
